November Issue On the Way! Until Then. . .
Enjoy Big Blue Hearts

The November issue of Music Spectrum will be posted around November 7. Until then, here’s a look at another rising artist. . .

Big Blue Hearts
Big Blue Hearts has just enough of the BoDeans in their sound to put them on the country side of things while tapping into the Roy Orbison-Chris Isaak music vine. Hold on past those first country twang notes on “Lovin’ You,” the opening track of Big Blue Hearts’ Here Come Those Dreams Again, and you’ll find that rock sensibility. “Nah nah nah nah yeah yeah” kicks off the title track with its pop rock tone. Like the BoDeans, there are sing-along songs about hearts filled with love.

“Dreamin’ of a Woman” is a brooding tune. “Don’t Mind Messin’” swings the blues about “my baby.” Like Isaak, there’s a crooner and 50’s blues rockabilly tone that channels Orbison’s warble while never reverting to some poor tribute band sound.

Not having an older brother, I took musical advice from my friends’ older brothers. In ninth grade, Dan’s older brother, Scott, was into the BoDeans, so without hearing one note first, I bought Love&Hope&Sex&Dreams. Well, that first note I heard was very, very country leaning, and I almost felt buyer’s remorse. But knowing that I wanted to live up to Scott’s standards, I held on and found that beyond the country twang in the BoDeans was a rock sensibility that uniquely tapped into the broad range of the genre, inviting you to join the guys in singing.

I’m not your older brother, but perhaps you’re willing to take my musical advice. Listen to Big Blue Hearts, hold on past any twang, and you’ll find yourself singing with the croon-along songs, your heart filled with the love that’s in their music.

Thanks to Big Blue Hearts and Echo Music for the review copy.
