Hip Hop/Rap: Various Artists on Dim Apathi/No Apathy

Dim Apathi
MC Mabon opens the 2002 Dockrad Records sampler, Dim Apathi/No Apathy with “Ooowahha…” which is a major reason for shelving the Go! Team next to this Hip Hop collection. MC Mabon gives a jamming rock run at a Hip Hop party song with those cheerleader team vocals like the Go! Team.

Recordiau Dockrad Records produces some great music coming out of Wales. The actual title of the sampler is both in Welsh and English (Dim Apathi: Cerrodoriaeth Gymraeg Gyfoes/No Apathy: Modern Welsh Musis). Dim Apathi and Dockrad will not let Welsh Hip Hop and rock music be overlooked.

The Erban Poets rap on “Scattered Star” with a nice R&B chorus. Dau Cefn’s “Buwch 13” has almost a tribal beat. Skep’s “Bam Bam” combines fuzzy, funk organ with deep bass, mumbling raps, all in a minor key. V’s “Bag of Chips” is really something to behold. V, otherwise known as Volente, has now release her album, Cold Clean, which is on my growing list of reviews to write.

For anyone who thought it strange how urban style has come to the small towns across America, so that you can see youth in little country towns doing the ghetto strut, here is a rap for agrarian society—such as Wales. Badon’s song “Massey Ferguson” celebrates the farm tractor. If Eminen is from out past 8 Mile Road, then Badon’s farm must be beyond 140th Mile Road—riding that Massey Ferguson instead of some ghetto mobile. That’s the kind of thing you’ll find when you connect with Dockrad Records and modern Welsh music.

Thanks to Recordiau Dockrad Records for the review copy.
