Electronica: Bjork Performs at the Olympics
—Except NBC Made You Miss It!
Bjork at the Opening Ceremony of the 2004 Athens Summer Olympics
Boo, Bob Costas! Hiss, Katie Couric!
Apparently they don’t like Bjork, but this was the big performance at last night’s Opening Ceremony of the Olympics. They talked through her entire song, and NBC hardly showed her. I don’t remember Sting and Yo-yo Ma getting that kind of treatment during the Opening Ceremony of the Salt Lake City Winter Games. The United States media is biased against Bjork and other artists who are hugely popular in Europe and elsewhere in the world but not in America. All Costas and Couric could remember about Bjork was the swan dress (which nobody understood anyway).
Unfortunately, if you were watching, you didn’t get a chance to hear Bjork’s song, “Oceania,” from her forthcoming album, Medulla. It shows her incredible range of voice, sense of theatrics, and a combination of cabaret, rock, and Electronica. Having heard a selection of cuts from her Livebox set, I am enamoured with this combination, especially on songs like “Army of Me” and “Hyperballad.”
Do not follow NBC’s lead. Get yourself a Bjork disc and discover a truly unique musician.
